The Language of Flowers – A Mother’s Day Bouquet
27th February 2025
FINDING THE PERFECT GIFT FOR MOTHER’S DAY CAN SOMETIMES FEEL LIKE A CHALLENGE. YOU WANT TO GIVE SOMETHING THAT HOLDS MEANING, SOMETHING THAT LINGERS LONG AFTER THE DAY ITSELF—BECAUSE A MOTHER’S LOVE IS NOT JUST FOR ONE DAY, BUT SOMETHING THAT CARRIES US YEAR AFTER YEAR.
Last Mother’s Day, I wanted to create more than just a floral illustration for my mum. I wanted to craft a keepsake, a card filled with symbolism and heartfelt emotion, a small tribute to the love and care she has always given me. My Mum is always there for me, no matter what time of day, I know I can call and she will always listen. I’m extremely grateful to have her in my and my family’s life.
Since I started creating botanical illustrations, I have become fascinated with the Victorian art of Floriography (the language of flowers). At first, this started with couple’s bouquets for their weddings, after all their florist often chose certain flowers that represent love and long-lasting happiness. The language of flowers is an art form and subject that seems to be having a revival in a time when symbolism is adored. Using this language, I like to see myself as a petal to pen florist, maybe a digital florist and this gave me the idea to create the perfect bouquet to gift for Mother’s Day.
There’s something magical about flowers, the way they hold meanings, tell stories, and evoke emotions with a single bloom. For Mother’s Day, I wanted to create something that celebrates the beauty and symbolism of flowers, capturing their delicate charm in an illustration for a special card.
The Symbolism Behind the Bouquet
Inspired by the language of flowers, I chose a bouquet of hydrangeas, anemones, delphinium, and gypsophila—each with its own unique message of love and appreciation.
Hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla)
Full blooms of gratitude, grace, and devotion, making them the perfect symbol of appreciation for a mother’s unwavering love. While hydrangeas have sometimes carried negative connotations in the language of flowers—such as vanity or heartlessness—I prefer to embrace their more positive meanings of deep appreciation and heartfelt emotion. Their cloud-like clusters speak of abundance and deep connections.
Anemones (Anemone coronaria)
Fragile and wispy, anemones are full of healing love and protection—a reminder of the quiet strength and guidance a mother offers throughout life’s journey.
Delphinium (Delphinium)
July’s birth flower, the delphinium, is a burst of summer joy, bringing a sense of positivity and encouragement. Its tall, elegant stems reach towards the sky, much like the way a mother nurtures dreams and aspirations.
Gypsophila (Gypsophila paniculata)
Also known as baby’s breath, gypsophila represents delicate everlasting love, purity of heart, and sweet beauty. It’s the soft and airy touch that ties everything together, much like the gentle moments shared between a mother and child.
A Keepsake of Love for Mother’s Day
This floral-inspired card design is a love letter in petals, a way to celebrate the women who shape our lives with kindness, resilience, and warmth. Whether given alongside a real bouquet or as a keepsake, it’s a reminder of how flowers, both drawn and real can speak the words we sometimes struggle to say.
I’d love to know—what flowers remind you of your mother?
I currently do not yet sell this piece as a card or print but if you are interested in purchasing this design please get in touch. Or maybe you would like to create your own bouquet for a special someone with your own arrangement of handpicked flowers.
